Case 200: Mitral Valve and Annular Terminologies

A snippet on the various conditions and terminologies that affect the mitral valve

Case 200: Mitral Valve and Annular Terminologies

This is a snippet that deals with the different terminologies and conditions that affect the mitral valve.

  • Stenosis - jet into LV across MV in diastole
  • Regurgitation - jet into LA across MV in systole
  • Thickening - > 5 mm thickness
  • Hockey-stick and fish-mouth appearances of rheumatic mitral valve disease
  • Prolapse - most atrial part of the coaptation line > 2 mm into the LA
  • Billowing - displacement > 2 mm of any leaflet tissue into LA in systole
  • Flail - the undersurface of the mitral leaflet flips up and is exposed to the left atrium
  • Mitral-Annular Disjunction (MAD) - > 2 mm separation between LV myocardium and mitral annulus
  • Annulus Expansion - abnormal expansion of annulus in systole rather than contraction
  • Curling - paradoxical systolic motion of the posterior mitral ring on the adjacent myocardium
