Case 200: Mitral Valve and Annular Terminologies
A snippet on the various conditions and terminologies that affect the mitral valve
This is a snippet that deals with the different terminologies and conditions that affect the mitral valve.
- Stenosis - jet into LV across MV in diastole
- Regurgitation - jet into LA across MV in systole
- Thickening - > 5 mm thickness
- Hockey-stick and fish-mouth appearances of rheumatic mitral valve disease
- Prolapse - most atrial part of the coaptation line > 2 mm into the LA
- Billowing - displacement > 2 mm of any leaflet tissue into LA in systole
- Flail - the undersurface of the mitral leaflet flips up and is exposed to the left atrium
- Mitral-Annular Disjunction (MAD) - > 2 mm separation between LV myocardium and mitral annulus
- Annulus Expansion - abnormal expansion of annulus in systole rather than contraction
- Curling - paradoxical systolic motion of the posterior mitral ring on the adjacent myocardium
